Everywhere you look right now, someone seems to be taking Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Zepbound®, or another GLP-1 medication. Women who have struggled with weight loss for years are finally seeing the scale move, and if we’re being honest, maybe you’ve wondered:
Is this the answer I’ve been waiting for? Should I be considering it?
As a Christian woman, you want to make a wise decision. You want to honor God with your body while also doing what is best for your health. Listen to our full episode here.
As both a physician assistant and a Christian health coach, I’ve walked alongside hundreds, probably thousands, of women on their health journeys. This isn’t medical advice, and I encourage you to talk with your healthcare provider before making any decisions. But if you’re standing at the crossroads wondering whether a GLP-1 is right for you, I hope this conversation helps you think through it with wisdom.
GLP-1 medications were originally developed to help people with diabetes by regulating blood sugar and insulin.
In simple terms, they can:
For many women, especially those with diabetes or significant insulin resistance, these medications can be incredibly helpful. That’s one reason so many women are seeing results.
It’s not magic. They’re helping address a metabolic issue that has often been developing for years.
I want to be fair because I do believe there are benefits.
I’m not anti-GLP-1.
They’re not evil.
Many women don’t have a willpower problem. They have a metabolic health problem.
Years of blood sugar dysregulation, insulin resistance, chronic stress, poor sleep, inactivity, and processed foods can create a body that feels like it’s fighting against you.
GLP-1 medications can improve insulin sensitivity and may help women with significant insulin resistance, prediabetes, diabetes, or stubborn weight loss plateaus. Those are important conversations to have with a healthcare provider who understands metabolic health.
After practicing medicine for more than 15 years, one thing I’ve learned is this:
If something feels like a miracle cure, I become cautious.
Not because medications are bad, but because medicine has taught me humility.
Years ago, statins were viewed as the answer for cholesterol. While they certainly have a place, we’ve also learned much more about their long-term effects over time.
GLP-1 medications for weight loss are still relatively new. That doesn’t mean you should never take one, but it does mean we should make wise decisions by looking at both the benefits and the risks.
Potential concerns include:
These risks won’t happen to everyone, but they are worth understanding before making a decision.
Here’s where I think the conversation often misses the mark.
The vast majority of women are not consistently doing the things that actually improve metabolic health.
That isn’t because they’re lazy.
It isn’t because they don’t care.
It’s because no one has ever taught them how.
Many women think they’re eating healthy, but eating healthy doesn’t always mean you’re improving insulin resistance. Learning how to stabilize blood sugar, improve insulin sensitivity, build muscle, sleep well, manage stress, and nourish your body with real food is different than simply trying to “eat better.”
That’s why I’m so passionate about lifestyle medicine. It’s not another diet. It’s learning how your body was designed to work.
One thing I’ve noticed after reading countless books on insulin resistance, longevity, and disease prevention is that they all point back to the same foundation:
Eat real food.
Not processed foods.
Not refined carbohydrates with little nutrition.
Real food.
The food God created.
When you consistently nourish your body with quality protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and intentional carbohydrates, your body begins working the way it was designed to work.
This is one reason I believe biblical weight loss starts by restoring the glory of God in real food.
If you’re looking for a Christian weight loss program that teaches this approach, our guide to faith based weight loss is a great place to start.
One of the biggest reasons women are interested in GLP-1 medications is because they want relief from food noise.
While these medications may help physiologically, they’re not the only answer.
Food noise often improves when you:
When your body gets the nourishment it needs, it often stops asking for food all day long. Protein supports blood sugar, muscle, and lasting satisfaction.
When you begin seeing food the way God designed it instead of something to fear or obsess over, your cravings begin to change.
Sometimes food noise isn’t really about food.
It’s about stress.
Loneliness.
Fear.
Overwhelm.
When we invite God into those places instead of turning to food for comfort, we begin experiencing the freedom He desires for us.
Muscle is one of God’s greatest gifts for metabolic health.
The more muscle you build, the more insulin sensitive your body becomes.
That’s why I encourage every woman to prioritize protein and resistance training, whether she’s taking a GLP-1 or not.
You don’t just want to lose weight.
You want to become stronger, healthier, more energetic, and more equipped for the work God has called you to do.
The habits that improve metabolic health usually aren’t flashy.
Walking after meals.
Prioritizing sleep.
Managing stress.
Balancing blood sugar.
Moving consistently.
These simple habits, practiced consistently, can completely change the trajectory of your health.
Here’s where I land.
I’m not anti-GLP-1.
There are women who genuinely benefit from these medications.
But I also believe there are many more women who have never truly been taught how to improve their metabolic health or address the root of the struggle.
Not through another diet.
Not through starvation.
Not through white-knuckling another plan.
But through real food, building muscle, improving metabolic health, and inviting God into the deeper heart work.
If you’re considering a GLP-1 because you’re exhausted, frustrated, or hoping it’s finally the thing that fixes everything, I simply encourage you to pause and ask a few questions.
Have I learned how to nourish my body well?
Have I addressed insulin resistance?
Have I built muscle?
Have I invited God into the reasons I struggle with food?
Those conversations matter just as much as the medication itself.
Friend, if you’re considering a GLP-1 medication, I’m not here to pressure you or judge your decision. I simply want to encourage you to look at the whole picture.
Let’s talk through where you are, what’s driving the struggle, and whether there may be another path forward that creates lasting freedom.
Inside Fit Moms Academy, my Christian weight loss program, we help women improve their metabolic health, understand real food, renew their minds, and invite God into every part of their health journey.
Because lasting transformation isn’t just about seeing a lower number on the scale.
It’s about becoming the woman God created you to be.
