The number one thing I hear from women is that they cannot stay consistent. Maybe you know what to do, but you get off track, fall into all-or-nothing thinking, and start over every Monday.
That is why I created the free Consistency Reset. Recognizing why consistency is hard can help you stop spiraling and begin moving forward.
Inside Fit Moms Academy, women recently completed week three of the Consistency Project. Some were down six pounds, five pounds, two pounds in one week, and another three pounds in one week.
Weight loss is not rocket science. The deeper work is learning why we do not follow through, how to invite God into the journey, how to stop using food for comfort, and how to show up because we realize we are worth it.
I am a lifestyle medicine physician assistant turned Christian health coach. Six years ago, I started coaching women, and since then the Lord has challenged much of what I thought I understood about health, weight loss, medicine, behavior change, and spiritual transformation.
Here are nine of the biggest Christian weight loss lessons I have learned.
My husband and I both love health. I have worked as a PA and health coach, and he is a physical therapist.
Organization does not come as naturally to us. We once took a color personality test and discovered we are both blue-orange—people-oriented, spontaneous, entrepreneurial, and fun—but not especially “gold,” which represents order and rule-following.
After having a baby, starting businesses, homeschooling, serving in ministry, and constantly going, we realized parts of our home had been neglected. My husband decided to step away from some ministry work for at least six months so we could focus on creating order at home.
It was hard because the ministry was good. But sometimes real change requires saying no to something good so you can focus on what matters most in the current season.
The same may be true in your health journey. You may need to eliminate or pause something while you change your thinking, build new habits, create new neural pathways, and establish healthier patterns.
Before coaching, I worked in family medicine. I loved my patients and thought I understood health, weight loss, and why people struggled.
Since leaving medicine, I have realized many of my assumptions were incomplete. What we often call health care is really sickness care.
I still love medicine. I am a PA, and medicine and surgery have literally saved my child’s life.
But when patients came in with elevated blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, or autoimmune symptoms, the next step often focused on medication. Nutrition and movement were usually treated like an aside.
That is how providers are trained, so give them grace. They spend years and significant money learning what they believe is health care.
Much of what I later learned came from outside mainstream medicine. My lifestyle medicine certification, for example, focused on preventing and reversing disease through plant-based eating, movement, and stress reduction.
True health is built long before you arrive at the clinic. Some of your greatest health decisions happen through what you put on your plate and how you move your body.
The more women I coach, the more interested I become in metabolic health, insulin resistance, blood sugar dysfunction, inflammation, and muscle loss.
Honestly, insulin resistance is a delicious topic to me. I love learning how the body uses insulin, how cells become resistant to it, and what can be done about it.
I was not taught much of this in PA school. I received a valuable education, but many tools I now use to help women get well were not part of that training.
Muscle matters, too. Ladies, we need to get you lifting and building muscle.
Real food can also influence inflammation. One of my clients saw her CRP, an inflammation marker, normalize after she began eating real food the way we teach inside Fit Moms Academy.
Even her dentist noticed a difference in her dental health and asked what she had changed. Her answer was simple: she was eating real food.
Metabolic health influences type 2 diabetes, heart disease, dementia, fatty liver, PCOS, and infertility. The more I learn, the more convinced I am that metabolic dysfunction is one of the greatest and most treatable health challenges of our generation.
Women usually come into my world because they want smaller pants and a lower number on the scale. Underneath that desire, however, there is often much more.
The biggest issue I see is shame. Shame because you tried everything and believe you failed, shame because you let yourself get to this point, or shame because you cannot believe how far your body has changed.
When we help you break out of shame, you can pursue health without fighting yourself.
I also see perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, fear of failure, fear of success, people pleasing, weak boundaries, and self-neglect. These are things I did not fully understand in the medical world but began seeing through personal coaching.
There can also be spiritual roots. One of the biggest is using food for comfort instead of relying on your heavenly Father.
That requires asking when food became your source of comfort, what led you there, and how you can begin receiving comfort from the Lord instead.
The weight struggle may be revealing deeper struggles that God wants to heal.
Most women know vegetables are healthy, exercise matters, and sleep is important. Yet they still struggle because behavior change is hard.
We have to look at routines, schedules, boundaries, meal planning, accountability, and why consistency keeps breaking down.
A provider may tell you to meal plan and eat more protein. That advice does not account for baseball four nights this week, a husband working long shifts, or how exhausted you feel.
General advice rarely addresses the details of your life. Coaching and community help you get into the nitty-gritty so the journey stops feeling impossible.
One of the biggest mistakes in health is fragmentation.
Some people focus only on hormones, supplements, or labs. Others focus only on mindset, prayer, calories, or macros.
God designed us as whole people. The body, mind, emotions, and spirit constantly influence one another.
One student I am working with feels stressed, overwhelmed, and sleeps poorly. That poor sleep increases sugar cravings, which can worsen insulin resistance and lower her energy.
Calling her undisciplined would miss the full picture. We have to ask better questions about boundaries, exhaustion, emotions, spiritual struggles, and what is happening physically.
I know more about health now than ever before, but I also realize how much I still do not know.
I want to keep learning about functional medicine, cellular and mitochondrial health, longevity, prevention, metabolic health, and muscle as medicine. Five years from now, I may listen to this episode and smile at how much I still had left to understand.
You do not need to know everything before you begin. You know more now than you knew five years ago, and in another five years you will have even more wisdom.
What if you committed to learning about your health and yourself? You may look back and say, “Thank You, God, that I started.”
I believe God is calling His people to greater stewardship, and more Christians are beginning to ask important questions.
Does my health matter to God? How can I better steward this body? How can I have the energy to fulfill my calling?
This is not about vanity, obsession, or fitting into fitness culture. It is about caring for your body as a vessel of the Holy Spirit.
We cannot expect to live below God’s design in every area of health and avoid the consequences. Those consequences may show up as constant thoughts about weight, low energy, low libido, low confidence, and eventually disease.
Kingdom living is not limited to Sunday morning. It includes aligning how we care for our bodies with God’s wisdom.
I do not know exactly where the next five years will take me, but I know I will keep learning about metabolic health, cellular healing, spiritual transformation, and behavior change.
I am also more convinced than ever that women need a place where all these pieces come together. That is what we are building inside Fit Moms Academy.
Weight loss may be the goal, but it is not the whole goal. The deeper goal is becoming the healthy, strong, energetic woman God created you to be—the version of you that heaven already sees.
Women need more than a better meal plan. Education and accountability matter, but God never designed us to do life alone.
Many women spend years trying to lose weight in isolation. They start over every Monday, make promises, give up, feel ashamed, and try again.
When they step into a community of women pursuing the same goals, something shifts. They realize they are not the only ones who stress eat, struggle with consistency, or need support.
They have women cheering them on instead of tempting them off track. They have people praying for them when life gets hard and celebrating their victories.
The enemy loves isolation because it keeps us stuck and trapped in shame. Community brings those struggles into the light, and healing often begins when a woman realizes she is not alone.
Maybe you know what to do but do not understand why you cannot stay consistent. Maybe you keep getting off track, falling into perfectionism, and starting over every Monday.
The free Consistency Reset will help you begin identifying the reason behind that pattern. You can also join the free Kingdom Fit Moms Facebook community for daily encouragement and support.
When you are ready for coaching, accountability, education, and a community where all these pieces come together, Fit Moms Academy is the next step.
You were not meant to carry this struggle alone. Start where you are, invite God into the process, and take the next consistent step.
