Cold and flu season is here, and sickness feels like it is everywhere.
As moms, we are doing everything we can to avoid our families getting sick. One kid gets sick, then you think you are in the clear, and then the next one gets sick. If you have multiple kids, this can feel like it lasts for a long time.
This year, I started thinking differently.
I did not want staying healthy to come from fear.
I did not want it to feel nagging or controlling.
I wanted my kids to understand their bodies and take ownership of their health.
Today I want to share a simple conversation I had with my kids that has completely changed the way we talk about health in our home.
Let’s get started.
Inside Fit Moms Academy, we celebrate wins because they matter.
This week, a Fit Mom shared a picture of her family taco night. She wrote, “Looks good, tastes good, makes you feel good.”
I love this win because it shows how God’s food is meant to be enjoyed. It is beautiful, satisfying, and nourishing. Our bodies feel their best when we honor them this way.
I do not want my kids eating well just because I tell them to.
I want them to understand why.
I also do not want food to feel like something to fear or something to feel shame around. I want my kids to grow up knowing how to eat real food, what a healthy plate looks like, and how to make decisions for themselves.
This matters when it comes to legacy.
If we do not teach our kids these things, the world will. And the world’s way often feels loud, confusing, and extreme.
Health does not need to feel complicated.
It needs to feel empowering.
I sat my kids down at the table with a piece of paper and drew a picture.
I drew one of my kids as a stick figure. Next to him, I drew another stick figure named Sally.
I asked them, “If Sally sneezes on you, are you going to get sick?”
They all said yes.
Then I said, “Actually, it depends.”
That opened the door to a conversation about the immune system.
I explained that our bodies have a way of protecting us, and that protection can be stronger or weaker depending on how we care for our bodies.
This simple explanation made sense to them right away.

I asked my kids what they thought helped their bodies stay strong.
They said things like:
Eating fruits
Eating vegetables
Eating God’s food
Drinking water
Getting good sleep
Moving their bodies
Playing outside
Laughing
Washing their hands
Now, instead of constant reminders, I can say things like, “Let’s make choices that help our bodies stay strong,” and they understand what that means.
We also talked about what makes it harder for our bodies to stay strong.
Eating a lot of sugar
Staying up too late
Sugary drinks
Not eating real food
Sometimes we still get sick. That does not mean we failed.
Health is not about being perfect.
It is about daily choices and consistency.
This conversation is about more than avoiding sickness.
It is about stewardship.
It is about teaching our kids how to care for their bodies.
It is about building a legacy of health in our homes.
This same shift applies to us as moms too.
Many women struggle because health has felt extreme or confusing for a long time. God’s way is simple, and simple works.
You do not need perfect routines.
You do not need control.
You need simple language, consistent modeling, and grace.
Sit down with your kids.
Draw it out.
Ask questions.
