Sometimes one of the biggest sticking points in a weight loss journey is this simple but loaded question:
“Where am I even going? What should my goal weight be?”
The BMI chart might tell you one thing. A doctor, friend, or influencer might say another.
And if you are anything like the women I coach, you may have worked so hard chasing a number that you picked out years ago, only to find out later that it was not actually the best or most realistic goal for your current season.
So let’s talk about it together.
As a Christian woman who wants to honor God with your body, what should your weight loss goal be?
This is exactly what I unpacked on the Kingdom Fit Moms Podcast, and I want to walk you through it here in blog form so you can revisit it anytime you need some clarity and peace.
Before we dive in, I want to celebrate a Fit Mom win from inside Fit Moms Academy.
One of our moms, who is also a physician assistant, was heading to a work conference and stopped at a small, faith-based coffee shop. On the mirror, she saw a verse from Psalm 34 that said, “I sought the Lord and he answered.”
She snapped a photo and shared it with our group as a non-scale victory.
Why does this matter in a conversation about goal weight?
Because inside Fit Moms Academy we are not just focused on the number on the scale. We celebrate the ways God is meeting women, healing their hearts, renewing their minds, and transforming their daily lives along the way.
Your goal is so much more than a number.
It would be nice if I could say, “Type your height and age into this formula and here is your perfect number.”
And yes, BMI can be a helpful starting tool. It gives you a rough range based on height, weight, age, and sometimes other factors. It can give a general idea of what a healthy zone might be.
But here is what I tell my students inside Fit Moms Academy:
So when someone asks me, “Kelsey, what should my goal weight be?” I do not start with the BMI chart.
I start with your story.

The first question I ask is:
“What is a weight you remember feeling really good at in the past, and how long ago was that?”
For example, say you currently weigh 220 pounds. Maybe you remember feeling really good at 165.
The next question is, “How long ago was that?”
If that was 15 or 20 years ago, your body composition has likely changed. Hormones, age, seasons of life, pregnancies, stress, all of that matters.
This does not mean you can never get back to a similar shape, strength, or size. You absolutely can build muscle, lose fat, and feel fantastic again. But it will take time and consistency, and we want to approach it in a way that is realistic and kind to your body.
So instead of saying, “My goal is 150 and I am not successful until I get there,” I would much rather help you take a stepwise approach.
Let’s stay with our example.
You weigh 220 pounds. You remember feeling great at 150, but that was 15 years ago.
Instead of obsessing over the full 70 pounds, we might say:
“Let’s start with 20.”
Each step becomes a micro goal.
Why do I like this better?
When you hit that first goal, we reevaluate together. How is your energy? How are your clothes fitting? How are your labs, like blood sugar and cholesterol? How is your confidence, your intimacy, your ability to do the things God has called you to do?
Then we decide the next step with wisdom, not pressure.
Honestly, I think “What should my goal weight be?” is often the wrong first question.
Here are some better ones to journal through or pray over:
These are real, meaningful goals.
From there, we can look at the number on the scale as a tool that reflects the work we are doing, not as the ultimate definition of success.
Here is something that happens all the time.
A woman will start out saying, “I need to get to 150. That is my goal. I will not be satisfied until I get there.”
Then she gets to 165 and realizes:
At that point, we get to ask:
“Is it worth pushing for those last 10 to 15 pounds right now?”
Sometimes the answer is yes. Maybe she has the margin to dial in her food more, add in more strength training, and is genuinely excited to see what the next level of fitness looks like.
Other times the answer is no. Maybe she reaches that place of strength and energy and realizes,
“I feel amazing. I am busy with my kids. My labs look good. My marriage is thriving. I am enjoying real food and my lifestyle is sustainable. I think we found a sweet spot.”
In that case, the “goal” becomes learning how to maintain that weight and way of living.
As Kingdom Fit Moms, we care about more than a number.
We care about whether you can:
Sometimes there are health indicators that need extra attention.
If your blood pressure, blood sugar, or cholesterol are still elevated, it might be worth pressing a little harder, fine-tuning your nutrition, or adding more movement so you can actually reverse or prevent disease.
But the deeper questions are:
When you invite God into your weight loss journey, He leads you to a path that is tailored to you. Your end point does not have to look like anyone else’s.
Here is a little “newsflash” I shared on the podcast.
There is not really a finish line on this journey.
Yes, you may reach a healthy, stable weight that feels like a sweet spot. But when you enter maintenance, your mindset shifts.
It is no longer, “How fast can I get there?”
It becomes, “How can I keep walking in obedience to God’s better ways, day by day?”
That is why I do not want you to settle for a quick fix that gets you into a dress but does not support a long-term, Spirit-led lifestyle.
Friend, your goal weight is not your identity. It is not your worth. It is not even the real finish line.
It is simply one tool in a much bigger picture of honoring God with your body, walking in freedom, and living out your calling with energy and joy.
If you want help figuring out what a wise, peaceful, and realistic goal looks like for you, I would love to walk with you.
Inside Fit Moms Academy, we:
You do not have to carry this alone.
Keep shedding the burden and shining your light.
