In the vast ocean of diet plans – from Mediterranean to Paleo, Keto to Vegan – two popular methods often spark debates: counting calories and tracking macros (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats). Many of us have found ourselves wondering, “Should I count calories or carbs to lose weight?” Let’s delve into this topic, drawing insights from various diet plans and focusing on the essence of the real food strategy that serves my clients best.
Calories are essentially the energy units in food. Our body requires a certain amount of energy (calories) each day to function – this is our basal metabolic rate. This rate varies depending on factors like muscle mass, age, and genetics. Additionally, our daily activities add to the number of calories we burn.
However, while counting calories can provide a framework for understanding our energy intake, it doesn’t always address the nutritional quality of the foods consumed.
Macronutrients – carbohydrates, proteins, and fats – are the building blocks of our diet. Each plays a unique role in our body’s functioning. So the question, should I Count Calories or Carbs to Lose Weight? The answer isn’t all that simple.
While both calorie and macro counting have their merits, they can sometimes lead to a restrictive mindset. Focusing excessively on numbers can divert attention from the quality of the food we consume which is what I’ve found to be the most beneficial for weight loss.
Begin by embracing real food – understand it, cook it, enjoy it with your family. Once you’ve established this foundation and if you hit a plateau, that’s when you might consider fine-tuning your diet, whether it’s through calorie counting, macro tracking, or altering food types.
In my work, particularly with Accelerator clients, the focus is not on numbers initially. We start with real food, then, only if necessary, we adjust intake based on specific needs or plateaus. It’s about finding a balance that works for your body and lifestyle, aligning with the principle that real food is the path to true freedom in eating.
Both calorie and macro counting have their places in the weight loss journey. However, they should not overshadow the fundamental principle of consuming real, whole foods. This approach not only aids in weight loss but also ensures overall health and well-being. Remember, the best diet plan is one that is sustainable, enjoyable, and in harmony with your body’s needs.
